A Practical Self-Assessment Checklist for Industrial Facilities

If you’re a manager of a factory, warehouse or workshop, chances are your a busy person.

You’re solving production issues, answering questions from the team, potentially sorting out fights and keeping everything moving at the same time. With so much going on, it’s easy to overlook your environment and wellbeing of your employees.

That worn section of flooring you’ve been meaning to look at. The shelving that’s slowly become overcrowded. Cracks beginning to show in your concrete. Employees overworked and not taking sufficient breaks. These are easy things to miss.

But by taking just 20 or 30 minutes every couple months to properly assess your facility can help identify safety risks, improve efficiency and make it much easier to prepare for customer visits, insurance inspections or formal safety audits when they arise.

To help, we’ve created a Self-Assessment Checklist that you can print or complete electronically while walking around your site. It covers the key areas every industrial workplace should review and provides space to note any actions that need to be taken.

You can download it by clicking on the image below or if you want a detailed explanation of what it includes and why these are important, keep reading!

Self Assessment Checklist for Industrial Facilities

Physical Work Environment

As you walk through your site, don’t just look at the big picture—pay attention to the details.

Are walkways clear? Is the lighting still adequate? Has your floor coating worn through in high-traffic areas? Are storage areas organised, and is ventilation providing a comfortable working environment?

Small issues have a habit of becoming bigger ones when they’re seen every day but never really noticed.

Equipment and Tools

TIt’s easy to focus on whether equipment is working, but it’s equally important to look at how it’s being used.

Do employees have enough space to work safely? Has everyone been trained correctly? Is PPE easy to access when it’s needed?

A quick review now can prevent incidents later.

Health and Safety

Emergency equipment should never become part of the background.

Check that emergency exits remain clear, fire extinguishers and first aid kits are accessible, any hazardous materials are being managed correctly, you have warning signs in place and walkways clearly marked.

Employee Comfort

A well-maintained workplace isn’t just safer – it’s a better place to work.

Take a look at your employee facilities. Are break areas clean? Is drinking water readily available? Are bathrooms well maintained? These details all contribute to a workplace people are proud to be part of.

Communication and Collaboration

Your employees often notice potential issues before anyone else.

Creating opportunities for staff to ask questions, raise concerns and suggest improvements can help identify hazards before they become costly problems.

Go On – Make It a Habit

One of the biggest benefits of a self-assessment is that it encourages you to stop looking at your workplace as somewhere you pass through every day and start looking at it as someone visiting for the first time.

You don’t need to find dozens of issues for the assessment to be worthwhile. Even identifying one or two improvements is better than nothing. We encourage you to write actions beside each improvement and put them in your calendar, you don’t need to do them all in one week. We know you’re busy so break them down into smaller more manageable tasks and you will notice the difference in your site and your team.

Download our Self-Assessment Checklist now or you’ll never do it. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
