What Type of Line Marking is Best for My Manufacturing Facility?

It’s easy to choose a line marking system based off what’s going to look the best or the easiest to arrange until you consider how your facility actually operates.

A manufacturing site may have forklifts, pedestrians, production cells, loading areas, chemical exposure, washdowns and changing layouts – all placing different demands on the floor. A system that performs well in one area may fail quickly in another.

For some low traffic facilities, painted line marking may provide the most practical, cost effective, long-term result. For others with higher traffic areas and larger workspaces, line marking tape, or projected markings will offer a long-term solution.

In saying that, there have been many customers we’ve worked with that have gone with a combination of systems for example putting our lean line tape in a low traffic area and putting projectors in a high traffic, high risk zone.

Now we’ll take a look at each option, where it’s typically used and what makes it the right choice for specific manufacturing applications.

Painted line marking

Painted line marking is one of the most common solutions for manufacturing facilities. It’s ideal for permanent layouts where traffic routes, pedestrian walkways and storage areas are unlikely to change but only for low traffic environments, the lines will not last with too much forklift traffic over them.

Best suited for:

• Pedestrian walkways
• Forklift routes
• Work bays
• Storage zones
• Exclusion areas
• Loading and dispatch zones

Advantages:

• Cost-effective for large areas.
• Fast to install
• Can be installed over existing markings

Limitations:

In high-turning forklift areas or harsh conditions, paint can wear quite quickly and require ongoing maintenance. It also needs sufficient curing time before the area can be returned to service and it’s known to attract dirt and mark easily which requires constant cleaning.

If your production layout changes regularly, repainting lines every time the floor plan changes can become costly and disruptive.

Epoxy Line Marking

Epoxy line marking is designed for tougher industrial environments where standard paint may not provide enough durability.

Best suited for

• Medium forklift traffic
• Wet areas – optional anti-slip additives
• Production zones
• Bold walkways

Advantages

• Liquid applied – doesn’t peel
• Doesn’t mark
• Gloss finish
• Slip resistance can be added
• 3yr warranty on adhesion

Limitations

Epoxy generally has a higher upfront cost than standard paint and requires thorough surface preparation to achieve the best results. It also must be installed by a professional and takes longer to cure meaning more downtime for your team.

If your facility frequently changes layouts or can’t afford the downtime, epoxy isn’t the option for your site.

Line Marking Tapes

Tapes provide a flexible alternative where layouts change regularly or downtime needs Floor marking tape is an excellent alternative to painted line marking where flexibility, fast installation and minimal disruption are priorities. Unlike painted lines, tape can be installed without shutting down production, making it ideal for facilities that need to remain operational during upgrades.

Mighty Line Floor Tape

Mighty Line is a premium industrial floor marking tape designed for busy manufacturing facilities where durability is essential. At 1.3 mm thick – up to seven times thicker than many standard floor tapes – it is built to withstand heavy forklift and wheeled traffic while maintaining a clean, professional appearance.

Advantages

• Up to seven times thicker than many standard floor tapes.
• Withstands heavy forklift and industrial traffic.
• Fast peel-and-stick installation with virtually no production downtime.
• Bevelled edges help reduce lifting and minimise trip hazards.
• Easy to clean and maintains a professional appearance.
• Damaged sections can be repaired without replacing the entire line.
• Easily removed or reconfigured if layouts change.
• Backed by a 3-year limited adhesion warranty.
• Can reduce ongoing maintenance compared to painted line marking.

Limitations

While Mighty Line is one of the most durable floor tapes available, it isn’t the best solution for every application. It relies on a clean, dry, well-prepared surface to achieve maximum adhesion, so heavily damaged, contaminated or uneven concrete may require repair before installation.

In extremely high-impact areas where forklifts are constantly pivoting or dragging heavy loads, even premium tape may experience edge wear over time. In these environments, epoxy line marking may provide a longer-lasting solution.

Lean Line Floor Tape – 570 & 960

Lean Line is an economical floor marking tape designed for low to medium traffic indoor environments. It’s ideal for facilities implementing Lean manufacturing or 5S systems where layouts may change regularly and quick installation is important.

• Pallet storage bays
• Material storage zones
• Production lines
• Equipment parking areas
• Workstations
• Safety and exclusion zones
• Food production facilities
• Pharmaceutical facilities
• Low traffic production areas

Advantages

• Quick peel-and-stick installation.
• No production downtime required.
• Bright colours improve visibility.
• Easy to replace when layouts change.
• Helps improve workplace organisation.
• Suitable for food production and pharmaceutical environments.
• Easy to clean.
• Available in a range of colours.

Limitations

Lean Line is designed for low traffic applications and isn’t intended for heavy-duty industrial use. It is not recommended for rough, damaged or porous concrete, and heavy forklift turning or dragging pallets across the tape will significantly reduce its lifespan.

Lean Line is not ideal for manufacturing facilities with constant forklift traffic or demanding operating conditions, Mighty Line will typically provide a better long-term solution.

Projected Line Marking

Projected line marking uses laser or LED technology to display highly visible lines and safety warnings directly onto the floor, rather than applying paint or tape to the surface. Because nothing is physically installed on the floor, the markings won’t wear away from forklift traffic or heavy use.

We offer two projected line marking solutions:

• Delta FieldLAS Laser Line Marking Projector – projects highly visible laser lines to define walkways, traffic routes and exclusion zones.
• Signum Line Marking Projector – projects both lines and safety symbols, making it ideal for applications where additional visual warnings are required.

Best suited for

• Dusty, dirty or wet environments where painted lines or tape wear quickly
• Cold storage and freezer facilities
• Pedestrian walkways
• Forklift traffic separation
• High-risk work areas
• Dynamic exclusion zones
• Areas requiring visual warning signs

Advantages

• No physical markings to wear away, chip or peel.
• Highly visible laser or LED projection improves awareness in industrial environments.
• Ideal for areas where traditional floor markings require frequent maintenance.
• Quick installation with virtually no production downtime.
• Line width and length can be adjusted to suit the application.
• Suitable for environments where floor markings are difficult to maintain, such as cold storage or wet processing areas.
• Can project safety symbols and warning signs as well as lines (Signum system).

Limitations

Projected line marking isn’t a cheap option, its a large investment especially if requiring a few of them. It performs best indoors and is not suitable for areas exposed to full sunlight, where the projection can become difficult to see.

Every installation must also be customised to suit the environment. Factors such as mounting height, viewing distance, lighting conditions and the area being marked all influence projector selection and performance.
