Common Flooring Problems | What to Look Out for Before Coating Your Floor

Floor coatings can be a great solution for many industrial environments – but the reality is, they aren’t perfect. And they don’t always last as long as people expect.

We often speak with customers that have issues with their flooring.

If you’re considering getting your floor coated, here are two of the most common flooring problems to be aware of and why they happen.

Cracking

Floors are one of the most overlooked elements of workplace safety. Over time, flooring Cracks in concrete are common, especially in older slabs or high-use environments. The issue is that cracks don’t simply disappear when a coating is applied over the top.

Heavy traffic – such as forklifts, machinery, or constant foot traffic can cause existing cracks to worsen over time. Without proper repair or treatment, those cracks can transfer through the coating, affecting both appearance and performance.

Addressing cracking before coating is critical. In many cases, this involves assessing the type of crack, repairing it correctly, and selecting a coating system that can handle the demands of the space.

Peeling

One of the most common complaints we hear is coating failure in the form of peeling. While this can look like a product issue, it’s often caused by what happened before the coating was applied.

Poor surface preparation, contamination, or underlying moisture issues can prevent a coating from bonding properly to the concrete. When this happens, even high-quality coating systems can fail prematurely.

Proper preparation may include:

  • Thorough surface grinding or shot blasting
  • Moisture testing and mitigation
  • Removing contaminants such as oils or residues

Preparation is not the most visible part of the process but it’s one of the most important.

If you’re planning a floor coating project or experiencing issues with an existing one, understanding these common problems is the first step toward avoiding them.
