How Long Do Concrete Floor Coatings Last?
First things first – we are talking about 2 pack / component epoxy or polyurethane floor coatings.
Ok, let’s start.
Coatings on concrete are a wear coating.
What we mean by that is, they will wear out over time in areas that get wear of course. Yes, unfortunately it will not last forever!
It all starts with preparation of the surface. One of the best ways to prepare it is by diamond grinding to remove surface contaminants and provide an abrasion to the surface for the coating to adhere extremely well to.
The product chosen to go on the floor is the next most important because this is what wears.
Did you know that some epoxies are up to 95MPa in compressive strength!? ?
(For those who don’t know, high strength concrete is only around 40MPa)
More than DOUBLE the strength of concrete! ?
So choose a high strength epoxy or polyurethane product that will take longer to wear out.
Lastly, the overall thickness of the product will ultimately be what determines how long it takes to wear out.
The thicker the coating, the longer it takes to wear out.
To give you a guide, a 3 coat system of around 1mm thickness can usually last up to 5 years.
But there are some variables…
1. Traffic – if you have extremely high wheeled traffic the longevity can reduce. High traffic areas may need more thickness to help them last longer.
2. Maintenance – if the commercial floor is constantly dirty and not cleaned regularly, the abrasion of the dirt can wear it out faster. So keep the floor clean.
It all comes down to weighing up between how long you want it to last and how much you are prepared to spend to make it last longer.
Hope you find this helpful and if there is anything we can do to help, just say the word.
