
How Much Downtime Can Your Workshop Afford? | Our Fast Curing System
Every workshop manager reaches the same fork in the road eventually: the floor is cracked, stained, or just past its best, and it’s time for a proper epoxy system. Then comes the question that actually decides the project – how long is the floor out of action for?
For a standard epoxy floor, it’s longer than most people expect.

Typically 1-2 weeks in total
The full chemical cure often takes 7 days or more after the 3-5 days of getting it coated. These timelines vary depending on the outside temperature and the size of your site..
For a business running on tight throughput, that’s not a maintenance job – it’s often 2 whole weeks of lost throughput.
The good news is, it doesn’t have to take that long and you certainly don’t need to close down your whole workshop for that long. There are two options to consider before you commit to shutting the whole site down.
Option 1: Standard epoxy, staged in zones
Instead of coating the entire floor in one pass, the site gets broken into sections – bays, aisles, or zones and each is coated and cured in sequence while the rest of the workshop keeps operating.
This doesn’t shorten the cure time itself; a zone coated in standard epoxy still needs its normal 5–7 days before heavy traffic returns to that zone. What it changes is the operational impact: only the active zone is ever offline, so production, deliveries, and equipment movement continue everywhere else.
A shop split into three or four zones might take several weeks start-to-finish rather than two weeks, because each section needs its own full cure window before the crew can move on. It also means coming back to site multiple times – more coordination shuffling inventory and equipment out of the active zone before each phase – which adds a bit to the cost over a straightforward single-phase job. But at no point does the whole workshop go dark, which could be the trade your site is happy to make.
Option 2: Fast-cure systems
The fast-cure products use a different chemistry to standard epoxy, and it shows up almost entirely in the cure timeline. Many of these systems are rated for forklift and heavy-equipment traffic within 24 hours after the 3-5 days spent coating it. That means the whole floor can be down for just a few days and not two weeks. Once again, these timelines vary depending on the outside temperature and the size of your site.
Although, fast-cure products have a much shorter pot life, which means less room for error once mixing starts – the crew needs to be sharper and faster, and there’s less margin if temperature, humidity, or timing drift from plan. It also sits at the higher end of the cost scale.

Which one works for you?
- Can schedule a genuine shutdown – a planned closure, a slow couple weeks, an off-season stretch? Single-phase standard epoxy is the simplest and cheapest path.
- Can’t afford to fully close, but can sacrifice one zone at a time? Staged standard epoxy trades a longer overall timeline for zero full-site shutdowns.
- Only have a short window (overnight or a weekend) and need the whole area back immediately? A fast-cure system will be the best option.
